A new trend in mirror decoration that made first its appearance during the latter Edo Period was the inscription of one or two large Chinese characters of three main categories: (1) natural and artistic themes such as flowers, birds, wind, and the moon; (2) auspicious words and phrases; and (3) expressions derived from legend, anecdotes, ancient poems, or other literary sources. The one character denoting “Flower” belong to the first category.
