In the Edo Period, Mount Penglai (Jap. Horai-san) was depicted on mirrors in two different manners. One was with a pine-and-bamboo motif and a crane and tortoise playing on a sandbar. The other design, as seen here, first appeared in the Edo Period. This mirror is unique for its depiction of Mount Penglai being carried on the shell of a gigantic tortoise.
