Characteristic petal-shaped or blossom-like mirrors depicting mystical flowers of good fortune were made during the Tang Dynasty. In addition to traditional round mirrors, octagonal and hexagonal shapes emerged during the Tang era. The edges of these mirrors were shaped like the petals of the hollyhock or the water chestnut, and were called “hollyhock-shaped hexagonal and octagonal mirrors” and “water chestnut-shaped hexagonal and octagonal mirrors.” The use of hollyhock and water chestnut shapes gradually spread to mirrors bearing other designs, even those not employing mystical flower motifs.
