There was once a popular weaving technique in which patterns of multicolored threads were woven in low relief over a background of fabric patterns. On these so-called “double-technique brocades,” circular decorative designs were most popular, mainly depicting cranes, butterflies, chrysanthemums, or wisteria, and these favorite motifs were gradually incorporated into mirrors.
