平安時代初期の鏡は、唐鏡の影響を受けていた。唐鏡の文様は、瑞花や鳳凰といった、観念的な題材が中心である。それに対し日本の鏡においては、瑞花は松・梅・山吹・菊・秋草（薄ほか、秋の植物の総称）など、鳳凰は鴛鴦（オシドリ）・鶴・雀など、日本でもなじみのある植物・鳥類に置きかわっていった。唐鏡の瑞花双鳥（双鳳）鏡の形状は八稜形（八つの花弁の形）が主流であるのに対し、日本の植物・鳥類を描いた鏡は円形が主流であるのも、和鏡の独自性を示している。
