This calligraphy is one of the classical Buddhist chants typically presented at a ceremony of a monk of the esoteric sect of Buddhism, lauding his achievements in attaining spiritual enlightenment. It is written in Bongo (Sanskrit transliterated into Japanese). The calligraphy appears on raw paper which had originally been a rolled edition, but was later framed by pasting two segments together to form a hanging decoration. According to the accompanying certificate of authenticity by the Edo calligraphy connoisseur, Kohitsu Ryosetsu (1612-75) and Ohkura Kyusui (1763-1825), this piece was executed by Fujiwara-no-Yukinari (also Kozei, 972-1027). The style is true to the Sesonji School developed after Yukinari. However, after comparison with authentic calligraphy masterpieces by Yukinari such as Poetry Volume of Po Chü-i or Poetry Collection of Po Chü-i, one begins to doubt if the Sanskrit Chants for Felicitous Occasion shown here truly shows Yukinari’s hand. Upon closer scrutiny, one notices that the traces resemble those of Fujiwara-no-Korefusa (1030-96), Yukinari’s grandson, as seen in his Hokuzan-Sho (Volume 3 and 7). Although this resemblance is not in itself strong enough evidence to authenticate Korefusa’s hand, this calligraphy is clearly from the mid-11th century when Korefusa was at the height of his career. As the sole calligraphy preserved to this day, this exhibit is extremely valuable.
