Mirrors cast during the early Heian Period were heavily influenced by Tang mirrors, which were mainly decorated with auspicious flowers, phoenixes, and other imaginary or mystical objects. Conversely, Japanese mirrors replaced those motifs with Japanese-style designs. Auspicious flowers were replaced by the pine, plum, globeflower, chrysanthemum, pampas grass, and other autumn plants, while phoenixes were replaced by mandarin ducks, cranes, and sparrows, all of which were more familiar to the Japanese. At the same time, while ancient Chinese mirrors were predominantly octagonal (often described as “water chestnut-shaped octagonal mirrors”), Japanese mirrors depicting plants and birds were round, another of their defining characteristics.
