The depiction of Mount Penglai (Jap. Horai-san) suspended in the sky over a vast sea was as popular during the Muromachi Period as in the preceding Kamakura Period, although there are partial differences. For example, the tortoise motif was replaced by the tortoise-shaped central knob, while the crane motif, often depicted with the tortoise, was gradually omitted.
