The main type of chinese mirror is circular form, there are also some examples of square mirrors. Though once into the Sui dynasty (581-618), exquisite shapes appear with circle form modulated into eight edge or petal forms. This mirror was made during the Tang dynasty (619-907). Cast in nickel, it has a highly distinctive and very lovely metalic beauty. The design is developed on a motif of zuika (auspicious flowers) in four clusters above, below, right and left of the central boss (knob). These flowers are considered omens of years of plenty. In fact, this flowers is only found in such decorative designs, and therefore does not have a real name. The word zuika means auspicious flower, and this is the name given it in Japanese art and cultural history. This beautiful mirror is an excellent example of the taste of Tang court aristocracy.
