This mirror combines a paired-beast motif of lion and kirin (giraffe-like imaginary Chinese creature) with a paired-bird motif depicting the phoenix and the simurgh bird. These mirrors are characterized by their close-to-reality depictions, as opposed to traditional mirrors. Many of these were crafted into various shapes, in addition to circular ones; some were patterned after hollyhock flowers, some after water chestnut flowers, while others simulated different flower shapes. This mirror is shaped like a hollyhock and is called a “hollyhock-shaped octagonal mirror” after the eight petals forming its edge. The rim is decorated with a motif of flowers, twigs, birds and butterflies.
