The Kitano Tenjin Engi was one of the pictorial scrolls depicting the history of temples and shrines and their production began in the latter Heian Period, but they became especially popular during the Kamakura Period. The handscroll entitled Kitano Honji is a rare rendition of Indian ink drawing (monochrome), and is unique among the numerous extant tenjin engi pictorial handscrolls. It depicts the historical facts concerning the founding of the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, miraculous tales gleaned from a variety of sources and Buddha’s blessings, though it has been cut into various segments, and separately handed down through many different families. The segment corresponds to a part of the text from Paragraph 5 ‘court lady steals a garment’. It is quite rate that the pictorial text of a tenjin engi should be written in katakana; therefore, this segment is a rare and valuable legacy. It is attributed to Fujiwara-no-Tameie (1198-1275) without verification. The flowing free hand, however, shows it was written during the latter half of the 13th century in the Kamakura Period when Tameie was at his height. The calligraphy manuscript in katakana starts with Kiyosuke Version Gosen Wakashu (Later selection of Japanese Poetry), though this style is quite rarely seen thereafter. It makes this segment important both in the science of kohitsu and Japanese literature.
