狻猊（獅子）や麒麟などの獣文に、鳳凰や鸞鳥などの鳥文を組み合わせたもの。それまでの時代の鏡に比べ、写実的に描かれているところに特徴がある。円形ばかりでなく、アオイを模した葵花（きか）形、ヒシを模した菱花（りょうか）形など、様々な形状の鏡が作られた。これは菱花形で、八つの花弁を持つため、八稜鏡と呼ばれる。縁部は、花枝、鳥、蝶などの文様で飾られる。
