This detached segment is a calligraphic copy of Volume 8 ‘Songs of Parting’ from the Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems), written on indigo-dyed paper. Originally, it was a part of a bound book (of pasted paper-leaves) of 20 volumes. Each page is characteristically bordered with light Indian ink.The calligrapher of the Imaki-gire was traditionally known as Asukai Masatsune (1170-1211) of the early Kamakura Period. However, it was discovered that the entire editorial postscript was copied in the Shozakki, or a Collection of Thesis on Poetry (Kyoto University’s collection) rendered by Asukai Masayori (1358-1428) and that the Imaki-gire series has an extant segment with partial transcription of the editorial postscript (Kohitsu Tekagami, Calligraphic Exemplars; Mitsui Bunko Library Collection). These facts contributed to identify the author of this calligraphy to be Fujiwara-no-Norinaga (1109-1180). The editorial postscript describes that Norinaga made calligraphic reproduction of the Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems in August 1177, and used it to deliver a lecture to Princely Priest Shukaku (1150-1202) in September. Norinaga was one of the most celebrated calligraphers of his time. The Imaki-gire was created when Norinaga was 69 years old. The strokes using the thicker body of the brush are energetic. The name of this segment may be due to the Imaki Family, founded by Imaki Tamechika (1575-1610), to which the fragment has been passed down.
