This segment contains a poem written from the Shin Kokin Wakashu, or the New Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems, and the handwriting is attributed to the famous Priest Jien (also Jichin, 1155-1225) of the Tendai Buddhism Sect. The origin of the segment’s name is unknown. The original edition had a bound format, written on choshi, a fine and storong paper. Priest Jien’s authentic exist as letters (private collection), dedicatory prayers (Tokyo National Museum) and waka kaishi (Nara National Museum and the Goto Museum). Compared with those extant works, one cannot verify the segment shown here to be authentic, but the style indicates that it was indeed created toward the early 13th century, which would make it contemporary to the Priest Jien. As a manuscript of the Shin Kokin Wakashu (New Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems), completed in 1205, the segment is an important early calligraphic achievement.
