Araki Sohaku (1600-85) was an ancient-style calligrapher of the early Edo Period. His real name was Mitsutoki, but he was commonly called Mitsugi. He was born in Kyoto and was at first a vassal of Lord Karasumaru Mitsuhiro. Later, he served Lord Mizuno Katsunari (1564-1651) of Fukuyama (today’s Hiroshima Prefecture) and Lord Todo Takatora (1556-1630) of Tsu (today’s Mie Prefecture). Upon his return to Kyoto, Sohaku was in the service under Karasumari family. He shaved his head to enter the priesthood in the Rei-inji Temple, Kyoto, and from then on called himself Sohaku.Sohaku studied the Daishi School calligraphy from Fujiki Atsunao (1582-1649), but was an enthusiastic student of the ancient style, and was later responsible for the revival of the ancient style. This segment shows the rhythmical and free-flowing style. The heavy paper with a grid pattern has gold-painted designs. Silver dust is used to draw waves, while plovers are painted with gold dust.
