Originally, the “Best in the Nation” title was licensed by the authorities, but self-claimed “masters” soon began to use it freely. Thereupon, the government issued a decree in 1682, banning the arbitrary use of this title. This prompted mirror makers to use other titles, such as the “Lord of Yamashiro” or “Lord of Izumi,” the official titles of their lordships. Mirror makers paid money for such authorization, but when titles started to be inherited, the government banned such practice in 1766. The ban, however, was revoked six years later. The inscription on the mirror being regarded here reads “Kawashima Munetsugu, the Lord of Yamashiro.”

As a prototype feature, the Keio Object Hub uses AI (machine learning) to generate keywords for searches and filtering.
For the first launch, Google Cloud's Vision API will be used to analyze the images of each object and automatically generate keywords.
