梅に鶯の取り合わせは、特に『大鏡』の故事でよく知られている。村上帝の御代、清涼殿前の梅が枯れたので、紀内侍（貫之の娘）の家の梅を移し植えさせたが、枝に「勅なればいともかしこし鶯の宿はと問はばいかが答へむ」と歌が結ばれており、帝は感じ入ってその木を返却したと伝える。
