This is an example of a mirror with a family crest, use of which had been limited to aristocracy and the military class until the Middle Ages. Family crests became popular among commoners during the Edo Period as wealthy merchants started to place crest-like emblems on their clothing, furniture, and other possessions. One theory attributes the first family crest to late 17th c. merchant Kinokuniya Bunzayemon. During the heydays of this powerful trader and Naraya Mozayemon, the famed lumber merchant of Edo, the use of family crests became a fad.
