This is an example of a mirror with a mark “Best in the Nation.” During the Azuchi-Momoyama Period, powerful generals like Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi authorized consummated craftsmen the use of the mark “Best in the Nation.” Edo mirrors, as a result, often show these characters inscribed on them. Obviously, however, not so many artisans could have been authorized the use of this honorable title. The Biography of Lord Nobunaga (Jap. Shincho-Ki), for example, tells that this famous general was irked by finding “Best in the Nation” inscriptions everywhere. The abuse was not contained until finally a decree banning the title was issued in 1682.
