The bonsai technique of planting trees in a small pot and dwarfing them for appreciation was brought into Japan by the Zen priests of the Kamakura Period. Bonsai immediately found enthusiastic followers among Buddhist priests and the warrior class. Bonsai is described in the Illustrated Scrolls of the Kasuga Gongen Shrine Miracles and Essays in Idleness (Jap. Tsurezure Gusa), written toward the end of the Kamakura Period. Later, bonsai growing became popular among Edo’s commoners.
