Originally, the “Best in the Nation” title was granted to only a handful of masters, but soon was abused so much that a ban was issued in 1682 by the government. For the time being, the abuse subsided, but it wasn’t long before craftsmen were again abusing the title, despite the ban. The mirror shown here seems to be one such piece to have been produced when the ban was still in effect.
