Mirrors with handles have been excavated from the ruins of ancient Egypt, but they made their first appearance in the East during Sung Dynasty China, where traditional mirrors had been round. Crafting of mirrors with handles spread to Korea and Japan, where they flourished after the Muromachi Period, especially at the height of Edo.
