Nandin, or sacred bamboo, is an evergreen shrub in the Berberidaceae family. In traditional Chinese medicine, nandin fruit is used as a cough medicine as well as a tonic. Since “nandin” alliterates with “Nan ten” (lit. “Roll misfortune away”), it was considered auspicious and was often used from the Genroku Era (end of 17th c.) onward as a charm to ward off bad luck.
