Mirrors with modified a four-leaf pattern were some of the most popular bronze mirrors from the end of the Later Han Dynasty to Southern and Northern Dynasties Period. Radiating toward the rim from a circular, central knob were arranged the four leaves, appearing like flying bats, while the inner band was divided into four sections, also decorated with designs. The exhibited mirror has the head-of-beast motif in each section, hence its generic name: “head-of-beast mirror.” The head in this mirror, however, seems to have been omitted, leaving only the feather-like body of the animal.
