On this mirror, you can see a motif made up of several linked bows. The number of bows varies between six and a dozen or more, but the most popular arrangement had eight bows, which usually looped out to the mirror’s edge or through the inner periphery, while others did not. In the latter case, the linked-bow motif resembled a star. Hence, it is considered to have evolved from the star motif used to decorate bronze ware during the Shang Dynasty. The bows dividing the circle creates a beautiful line. The extreme beauty is realized here, intensified by the whorls on the ground pattern. The piece is one of the best mirrors of this era remaining today.
