After the demise of the Han dynasty, and the eclipse of the Six Dynasties period, China was unified once again under the Sui dynasty (581-618). As the elegant culture of the Sui court came to dominate all aspects of life, the designs on the back of mirrors underwent a virtual transformation, with intricate patterns based on grass and flower motifs becoming popular. The mirror shown here is a typical example of this development.Decoration is clearly divided into internal and external fields, maintaining the artistic formalism established under the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC) and continued thorough the Han period (202 BC-220 AD). The knob (boss) in the centre is immediately circumscribed by a ‘circle of spheres’ pattern, while the main decorative field consists of six circles of the same diameter, each enclosing floral (scroll) rossetes, auspicious flowers (Jp. hosoge). The flower pattern is based on a fictitious flower which had its origins in Buddhist art. A very large mirror for the Sui period, this piece is distinguished by its precise casting.
