This segment, containing calligraphed poems from the Wakan Roeishu (Anthology of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Recitation) was a part of the two thread-stitched volumes that have been inherited by the Tsumori Family, the Shinto priests of the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka, with three leaves missing. The original volume was cut into segments in Kyoto in 1939 and was named the ‘Yamashiro-gire’ from the old name of the locale. The relatively thick torinoko ryoshi (decorated paper) is used. The paper’s surface had been line-marked with a bamboo spatula to make a grid for achieving stylistic uniformity. Although the calligraphy is said to have been rendered by Fujiwara-no-Sadayori (995-1045), the son of the Kinto (966-1041) who selected the poems, the calligraphic style suggests that it was created by somebody else almost a century later, during the first half of the 12th century. The black-inked pronunciation and reading guides have been deleted for better aesthetic quality. Red ink shows intonation marks that help in poem recitation. These markings were added later, after the Kamakura Period. This fragment shows a poem from ‘Love’ in Volume 2.
