This segment shows an excerpt from the Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems, Volume 16, elegies) written on Japanese choshi paper with pulverized white mica scattered on the surface and further decorated with small gold and silver foils. Originally, it was a part of two thread-stitched volumes containing complete calligraphic manuscripts of the aforementioned poetry collection, but the extant segments all belong to Volume 2, and Volume 1 is likely to have scattered away early. Based on the decorative style of the paper and calligraphy closely resembling the Motozane Shu, the Poems by Fujiwara-no-Motozane in the Honganji Anthology of Thirty-Six Poets, this fragment is likely to date back to the early 12th century. The segment name of Oye-gire may have commemorated the owner of the collection, perhaps named Mr. Oye.
