A segment from a bound book which contains handwritings of poems from the Horikawa-In Hundred Poems. You can see traces of stitch holes at the right edge of the leaf, proving it was originally part of a thread-stitched volume. Horikawa-In Hundred Poems is a collection of one hundred poems created by 16 poets including Oye-no-Masafusa (1041-1111), Fujiwara-no-Kinzane (1053-1107), and Minamoto-no-Toshiyori (1055-1129), which was later presented to Emperor Horikawa (1079-1107) between May 1105 and the following March. The segment is a rare calligraphy in katakana. Although it is attributed to Emperor Gofushimi (1288-1336), it is obviously done by somebody else, as it is quite different from the emperor’s authentic handwritten poems. A segment from the same original, attributed to Hojo Tokiyori, included in the Calligraphy Exemplar (Kohitsu Tekagami), compiled by the court painters of the Sumiyoshi Family, has been preserved, but that also seems to be done by a different hand. The handwriting is considered to have been made in the mid-13th century. It is an important document as a bound book written in katakana and occupies a prominent place in the history of Japanese calligraphy.
