This sutra cylinder is made of bluish celadon, but compared with the products from the celebrated government-run Long Quan (Jap. Ryusen) Kilns of China, the color of the glaze is inferior. The type of clay suggests that it was made during the Northern Song Dynasty at Yuezhou (Jp. Esshuu) Kilns in Zhejiang Province. The cylinder's carved top forms a spiral around which six figurines, suggesting Buddha images, are seen. Otherwise, the figurines represent the Six Jizo symbolizing the Six Paths (Jap. Rokudo) of reincarnation of the Six Realms, namely hell, hungry spirits, animals, human and heavenly beings, etc. It’s also likely that the figurines represent the six goddesses of mercy to save the faithful from their suffering. This exhibit shows a rare extant sutra cylinder and is only unique to sutra mounds (kyozuka) found in Japan, without any counterparts in China. Most likely, someone had ordered its production in China.
