Tin Drinkware White Artifact Serveware

This ceramic container is said to have been unearthed from the ancient ruins in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, together with the bronze sutra cylinder catalogued as No.01341-0001. A cast bronze sutra cylinder had been preserved in the ceramic container as the pious tried to safeguard the copies of sacred scriptures until the return of the Miroku Bosatsu (Sanscrit: Maitreya Bodhisattva) 5.67 billion years later to save all humanity. Such Buddhist artifacts are a testimony of the solid faith of the ancient Heian-era people (12th c.). This ceramic container is an example of high-quality pottery crafted between the early 5th c. and the 12th c. Quality clay was formed into pots on a wheel and then fired at high temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Centigrade, without glazing. Inside the kiln, carbon particles deposit on the pots, giving them a grayish-black surface color. The patterns on the container were not intentional. The clay and fire accidentally produced attractive designs. The flat overlapping lid has a large chamfered brim, a fine sample showing off classical elegance.
