A fragment depicting ‘Miscellaneous Songs’ from the Kokin Wakashu, or the Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems. Originally, it was a part of a scroll. The beige base paper is decorated with woodblock prints on yaki-karakami style paper, which was produced in China under the Yuan Dynasty. The segment’s name may be attributed to the former owner, perhaps the Lord of Inaba (Tottori prefecture), but no further identification is possible. Nijo Tameuji (1222-86) is said to be the calligrapher, but this may not be accurate when compared with his authentic hand on waka kaishi and his will. The writing style reflects the Gokyogoku School popular through the early and mid-Kamakura Period. Each letter is characteristically thin, narrow and unsettled in appearance. The correction marks in red ink and additional comments in India black were done by later editors.
