Tableware Serveware Drinkware Pottery Cylinder

This hard ceramic container was made in the Sueki tradition. (Sueki: Unglazed pottery popular from the 5th through the 12th centuries, developed from the pottery-making technique brought to Japan from Korea.) The hard, sturdy and simple Sueki-style pottery was produced at the ancient Sanage Kilns. The ruins of the kilns, active from the ancient times (Kofun Jidai, or Later Tumulus Period, end of 5th c.) down to Kamakura Period (13th c.), have been discovered in the northeastern area of Nagoya City, where fragments of widely-varied pots had been created. The overlapping lid is flat at the top. On the surface of the lid and the body one can see streaks left naturally when using the potter’s wheel. The simple design and scanty decoration still express the petitioner’s commitment to preserving the scriptures for eternity.
