This bronze sutra cylinder has been handed down as an excavation from the ancient ruins in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, along with the ceramic container described under No.01341-0002. The cylinder had been preserved in the ceramic container as the pious tried to safeguard the copies of sacred scriptures until the return of the Miroku Bosatsu (Sanscrit: Maitreya Bodhisattva) 5.67 billion years later to save all humanity. The sutra cylinder is a reminder of the solid faith of the ancient people of the Heian Period (12th c.). The flat tightly-fitting lid has a graceful knob in the center. The chamfered brim adds to the overall simplicity. The green rust, gradually collected over the centuries, also adds serene elegance to this piece of art.
