This bronze sutra cylinder has a snugly-fitting lid. The raised lid creates a softly sloping line, but the popular knob is absent. Despite the simple design, the body of the cylinder is decorated with a statue of the Seated Amitabha (Jap. Amida Nyorai) and there is a Lotus Base (Jp. Renge-Za; Sk. padmasana) on the front of the lid. These designs were more associated with the Muromachi art, so perhaps the cylinder was cast in that era. The short size and very small scripture inscriptions suggest that this cylinder was used as a portable container of a sutra copy, carried around as a talisman. It is not certain where this cylinder was excavated.
