The exhibit shows a bronze sutra cylinder with a heaped lid. The double-tiered, raised lid sits snugly on top of the cylindrical body. The lid’s outer brim stretches out widely. A band decorates the cylinder’s brim. A short and large knob is fitted to the lid’s center. The inscription on the cylinder body reads, “2nd year of Tenei”, which corresponds to year 1111. The design of this sutra cylinder shows that it was most likely unearthed from a sutra mound (kyozuka) in northern Kyushu. Retired Emperor Shirakawa and Emperor Toba, both devout Buddhists, used to reign during the early 12th century. This sutra cylinder, therefore, is a good indication that Buddhism, the religion of the ancient imperial court, had already spread to the faraway Kyushu provinces.
