This is a bronze sutra cylinder with a heaped lid. The double-layer lid locks onto the cylinder’s top. A decorative band goes around the cylinder’s brim. In the center of the raised lid is a houshu knob. The inscription on the base reads, “By Priest Raishin, 20th day of February 1093”. From this, one can learn that this priest was the petitioner who initiated this pious Buddhist act of sutra making. This sutra cylinder is one of the relatively early, clearly chronicled examples.
