- Brown Handwriting Wood Font Book
This segment is a handwritten copy of a love poem from Volume 11 of the Kokin Wakashu, or the Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems. The large carp swimming among the water weeds is responsible for the segment’s name, whose literal translation is ‘carp-cut’. It is also known as ‘Akita-gire’. The paper used for the segment is a karakami (Chinese paper) of brownish dyed paper with shell-white pigment on which the carp and waterweed designs are painted with mica. The karakami paper is considered to have been imported from the Yuan Dynasty of China. The handwriting is attributed to Abutsuni (Nun Abutsu, 1222?-1283), the author of Izayoi Nikki (Diary of the Waning Moon), the concubine of Fujiwara-no-Tameie (1198-1275), although this attribution has not been verified. The delicate style seems responsible for attributing this writing, probably made toward the end of the 13th century (later Kamakura Period), to a woman.
