This container was specially crafted to preserve an Issaikyo (a complete set of scriptures) copied in gold ink on dark-blue paper and dedicated to Jingoji Temple in Takao, Kyoto, by Retired Emperor GoShirakawa (1127-92). It is not known how many containers were made originally, but there are now 45 such containers preserved at Jingoji. The exhibited container could have left the temple quite early. The black lacquer and the chamfered and raised top create a combined effect of chic elegance. The latch used to hold together the top and the bottom of the container has been lost.
