The Chinese bellflower, a bloom of early autumn, was the most favored and widely used motif, frequently found on lacquer makie, porcelain, dyed textiles, and other arts and crafts. The Japanese name for these flowers is “kichiko,” a term phonetically similar to “aki-chiko,” or “early autumn.” This phonetic association has been frequently adopted as a pun in Japanese poems since ancient times.
