Ruiju Koshu (Anthology of Ancient Poems) is the oldest book classifying the poems of the Manyoshu, or the Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves. It was compiled by Fujiwara-no-Atsutaka (unknown–1120). The poems written in Chinese characters are followed by hiragana reading and pronunciation guides. Excerpts from the Ruiju Koshu only carrying the cursive kana script were produced later as an abridged edition. The segment appearing here is an example from such an excerpt. It corresponds to Vol. 12 of the Ruiju Koshu and shows the four poems under the ‘Miscellaneous’ category in the Manyoshu. The names of the authors of the poems on the second and third lines are omitted and some differences exist from other popularized editions. The handwriting shows the Gokyogoku School style established by Gokyogoku Yoshitsune (1169-1206), and was presumably rendered during the mid-13th century. The handwriting is attributed to Nakatomi-no-Sukekata (1221-82), who was the priest of the Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine. As the Nakatomi family, holding the hereditary office of the high priest of the Wakamiya Shrine, was involved with the manuscript making of the Manyoshu, this segment seems to have been attributed to Sukekata. However, there is no verification that it is his authentic hand. And yet, this rare segment is a very valuable document in the body of Japanese literature.
