By the mid-Edo Period, makie techniques had become more advanced and complicated. Up until that time, various designs had been depicted only with silver and gold powder, but soon silver and gold foils as well as thick grains of precious metals came to be used. The little mounds on the exhibited letter box achieve a three-dimensional effect with their arrangement of small silver and gold plates and scattering of silver and gold grains.
