A fragment from Ruiju Uta-Awase (Collection from Poetry Contests), which was a 20-volume collection of compositions from over 200 poetry contests which took place between 885 and 1126. The collection was compiled by Minamoto-no-Masazane (1059-1127) who was assisted by his nephew, Fujiwara-no-Tadamichi (1097-1164). Ruiju Uta-Awase is also known as Twenty Volume Poetry Contests. Due to Masazane’s death, the final clean copy was not completed, but the draft written by 20 calligraphers had been handed down to the Regent Konoe family. Some parts were scattered during the early Edo Period and some were handed down and confusedly attributed to Fuhiwama-no-Toshitada (‘Nijo-gire’), Fujiwara-no-Tadaie (‘Kashiwagi-gire’), or Priest Saigyo (‘Uta-Awase-gire’). Nevertheless, they have been treated with great reverence. The fragment shown here depicts a poetry contest party held under the auspices of Consort Reikei-Den on February 29, 956.Fujiwara-no-Toshitada (1073-1123), to whom this calligraphy is attributed, is the father of Fujiwara-no-Toshinari (also Shunzei) and the grandfather of Fujiwara-no-Sadaie (also Teika). However, with the absence of the authentic Toshitada hands, this attribute has not been verified, even though this master was at the height of his career during the time of the poetry match in question. The Nijo-gire name may be attributed to Nijo Muromachi where Toshitada had a mansion, where he was called the Lord of Nijo. The strokes are mixed with thin and thick lines, obviously showing the hand of an expert. A bold and quick hand particularly results in the natural flow beauty.
