The tall and ever-green hemp palm originated in southern Kyushu. Its woven leaves were often made into uchiwa (hand fans), and diamond-shaped uchiwa, called hokisen, can be found on the Illustrated Handscroll of Mount Shigi (Shigi-san Engi Emaki). The hemp palm also was adopted as a family crest design by some powerful clans.. On the exhibited letter box, one can see hemp palm leaves depicted realistically on a surface of pearskin lacquer, a lacquer base sprinkled with gold powder and giving the appearance of the skin of the said fruit.
