A letter box is an elongated box for carrying, sending, or storing letters (which were in scroll form). The exhibited letter box is decorated with a motif of chrysanthemums tied to a letter, or perhaps a poem.Chrysanthemums were used symbolically to bring longevity and cast off bad omens. Often the actual letters were tied with these flowers and were accompanied by the saying “Do not forget the bygone years.” This letter box, decorated the telltale chrysanthemum-and-letter motif, must also imply the same message.
