Ancient Chinese people regarded the chrysanthemum highly for its medicinal qualities and alleged powers to promote longevity. During the Nara Period, the plant was brought into Japan. From this arose the Chrysanthemum Festival, held every September 9th, during which courtesans drank sake from cups with mums floating on top. People of Japan also used to soak cotton pads with the dew that had collected on chrysanthemums to moisten their skin, a medicinal rite for rejuvenation. Due to magical and medicinal qualities associated with chrysanthemums, motifs of the flower were often used to decorate ancient mirrors to ward off evil spirits. As people began to cultivate the plant on the Japanese archipelago, more and more stylized images of the flower were created and applied to arts and crafts. The “Inkstone Case with Chrysanthemums in Inlay and Makie” preserved at Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine (Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture) is a national treasure.
