Here, young cherry twigs appear among old and gnarled pine trees, and as shown in this makie, the pine was often depicted with its boughs outstretched, and cherry blossom patterns were traditionally arranged in a uniform manner. One of the oldest prototypes of makie lacquerware depicting cherry blossoms is the “Saddle with Cherry Blossoms in Mother-of-Pearl Inlays” (dating back to the Kamakura Period; property of the Agency for Cultural Affairs).
