This is a fragment from the 20-volume the Gosen Wakasyu (Later Anthology of Poems), the second anthology of Japanese poems (waka) compiled upon imperial command issued by Emperor Murakami. Copies of this anthology during the Kamakura Period include the first one rendered in 1223 and another one in 1234, both by Fujiwara-no-Sadaie (Teika, 1162-1241). Together they are called the Teika Versions and and occupy an important place in Japanese literature. The latter copy was created when Sadaie was 73 years old to preserve it as a family proof for his granddaughter. Most copies made after the Kamakura Era inherit the styles shown here, without much difference in the text. The segment shown here, attributed to Priest Jien (Jichin, 1155-1225), likely dates back to the early Kamakura Period in the early 13th century, thus, preceding the aforementionedTeika versions. With the absence of other segments from the same origin, the one shown here has a priceless value. Originally, it was a square-shaped booklet containing the copies of the two volumes of the Gosen Wakashu, compiling them into two volumes.
