The mythical bird the phoenix was believed to nest among paulownia trees. As such, paulownia was a favored decorative motif, especially after the Momoyama Period. One series of makie masterpieces, preserved at Kodaiji Temple (Higashiyama, Kyoto), was dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) and his consort and is known as the “Kodaiji Makie Collection”. The paulownia motif is typical among this collection. The exhibited letter box is elaborately decorated, with each paulownia leaf depicted representing a different makie technique. At the same time, arabesque patterns intertwine with the paulownia motifs in a dynamic manner, making an exhilarating impression.
