The mythical bird the phoenix was believed to nest among paulownia trees. As such, paulownia was a favored decorative motif, especially after the Momoyama Period.One series of makie masterpieces, preserved at Kodaiji Temple (Higashiyama, Kyoto), was dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) and his consort and is known as the “Kodaiji Makie Collection”. The paulownia motif is typical among this collection. On the exhibited letter box, a gold-and-silver alloy was used to draw the paulownia and the Chinese arabesque designs. The resulting hue is more bluish than found on ordinary gold-finished lacquerware and evidences the artistic mastery achieved by makie artists.
